Fall Gelb ("Case Yellow") was the codename for Germany’s offensive against Western Europe in May 1940. Its objective was to defeat the Allied armies and swiftly conquer France, Belgium and the Netherlands. On 10 May 1940, the invasion began with a spectacular combination of airborne and ground operations in the Maastricht–Liège region.

The surprise assault on Fort Eben-Emael and the bridges over the Albert Canal, carried out by paratroopers, glider-borne troops and the revolutionary shaped charges, marked a turning point in modern warfare. Within just a few hours, a fortress widely regarded as impregnable was neutralised, demonstrating the devastating effectiveness of airborne operations and changing military thinking for years to come.

Fall Gelb was de codenaam van de Duitse aanval op West-Europa in mei 1940. Het doel was de geallieerde legers te verslaan en Frankrijk, België en Nederland in korte tijd te veroveren. Binnen enkele uren werd een fort dat als onneembaar gold uitgeschakeld en veranderde de manier waarop de wereld naar luchtlandingsoperaties keek.
